10. American Psycho by Bret Easton-Ellis
“All it comes down to is this: I feel like shit but look great.”
Bret-Easton Ellis’ yuppy-inspired novel about the murderous rampages undertaken by the psychopathic and narcissistic Wall Street broker, Patrick Bateman garnered a response most authors could only dream of.
Of course, the attention was less about the novel’s qualities and more about the disturbing subject matter (one scene depicts Bateman slitting a child’s throat) which led both Canada, Australia and Germany to restrict the book’s reach.
