Lost to most for 400 years with the encroaching jungle of the high Andes nearly swallowing it up, it’s become a magical, bucket list destination ever since explore Hiram Bingham rediscovered it and published his findings in a 1911 book known as “Across South America.” A century later, it still astounds those who visit as a fascinating ancient wonder once home to Inca kings and an opulent retreat wrapped by the mist-shrouded Huayna Picchu Mountain that rises nearly 1,000 feet above the stone ruins, plazas and terraces.
